Years after charming everyone as the dapper Don Draper in Mad Men, Jon Hamm has got everyone talking again with his performance in the Tom Cruise starrer Top Gun: Maverick. The actor made it no secret that he wanted to be in the film so badly after he heard that a sequel to the 1986 original film was in the works.RELATED: How Did Jon Hamm Earn His Massive Net Worth? As some may have noticed too, Hamm loves to diversify his projects, perhaps more than any other actor. While he may do film and television, the Missouri native is also fond of doing ads. In fact, Hamm is open to doing more and more of them while insisting that he’s not a “24/7 movie star” like Cruise.

Jon Hamm Has Done Several Ads Throughout His Hollywood Career

Even beyond the world of Mad Men, Hamm has shown that he’s a real ad man. It’s almost like he lives for this stuff and why not? It’s a different kind of storytelling and Hamm loves to see how far he can push it. “It’s a challenge to tell a story in a 30-second spot,” the actor explained.

“It’s a challenge to get a message across in a one-minute spot or a 15-second ad or what have you. And there are so many creative ways to do that nowadays.”

Sure, some actors have started in commercials before moving up to movie and tv roles. But for Hamm, it’s a lot more fun to be doing everything at the same time. After all, there’s also a lot more respect for ads now. “It’s not lost on me that some of our greatest film directors got their start in the commercial space, like Ridley Scott and David Fincher,” Hamm said. “The old school stigma of doing commercials has rightfully washed away.”

Over the years, the actor has done voiceover work for Mercedes-Benz and American Airlines. At one point, he also starred in a series of commercials for the Canadian company Skip the Dishes. “That’s kind of taken off and become its own thing,” Hamm said of the ads. “I get recognized in Canada as an honorary Canadian.”

More recently, Hamm also starred in a hilarious commercial for Apple TV+ where he points out that Apple’s streamer has every star except for himself. Meanwhile, the actor has also wandered into the world of rom-com commercials as he plays Flo’s love interest in a series of Progressive commercials.

In the ads, Hamm plays Flo’s old flame and it’s hard to tell whether she’ll choose him over savings and bundles in the end.

Despite His Success, Jon Hamm Insists He’s Not A ‘24/7 Movie Star’ Like Tom Cruise

For Hamm, it was a long road to stardom and even years after his big break, he still recalls the time when he almost thought of giving up.

“I moved out to L.A. when I was 25, and I was like, 'If I'm 30 and I’m still waiting tables, it's time to move on to something else,” he said. “I remember I turned 30 on the set of We Were Soldiers. I was totally thrilled. I had a bunch of my friends fly down to come see me, and I was like, 'I'm making a living as an actor.' And I did it. I made it under the wire.”

It’s really a good thing that Hamm stuck with it because especially after Mad Men, more and more movies became available to the actor. He starred in the Oscar-nominated film Baby Driver and soon after, he joined Rosamund Pike in the crime drama Beirut. Hamm also joined the cast of the action-comedy Tag, which is based on a real-life group of friends who continue to play an annual game of tag as grown men.

Later on, Hamm starred opposite Oscar winner Natalie Portman in the space drama Lucy in the Sky, which was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. The actor also starred in the crime drama The Report, which is based on real-life events surrounding Senate staffer Daniel J. Jones’ investigation into the CIA’s use of torture after 9/11.

Clearly, Hamm has established himself as a movie star, but the actor doesn’t see it that way. “Tom Cruise, he is just a movie star,” the actor said. “That’s what he does, and he does it very well. But he is a movie star 24/7.”

Well, Hamm may insist that he’s not a movie star, but his upcoming projects say otherwise. For starters, he stars in the upcoming crime comedy Confess, Fletch, which sees him reunite with Mad Men co-star John Slattery. There is also the previously announced supernatural thriller Off Season.

Hamm is also attached to the murder mystery comedy Maggie Moore(s), which also stars Tina Fey. The film is being directed by Hamm’s good friend Slattery. And in between all these movies, Hamm will likely shoot a few commercials just to keep things interesting.
